K-5 Teachers of Mathematics

Lesley Math

Cisco Learning Institute is collaborating with Lesley University to develop web-based modules, online math tools, and interactive media to support the learning and teaching of mathematics for K-5 teachers. The materials are being piloted in North Carolina as part of an initiative to investigate and create certification opportunities to strengthen the knowledge and practice of teaching mathematics.

K-5 Mathematics Specialist Academy

Cisco Learning Institute is planning the development of a national K-5 Mathematics Specialist Academy that will provide a centralized curriculum and standards-based assessment for certification distributed over the Internet, locally-adapted customized instruction, and an instructor support system for training, support, and certification. Emphasis will be placed on reform orientation, the mathematics teachers need to know for teaching K-5 math, active and inquiry-oriented learning approaches, coherence with standards for the local school context, and the collective participation of teachers from the same school district.

In May of 2008, Cisco Learning Institute kicked off the project with the NCAMTE, the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, the Burroughs Wellcome Fund and others to sponsor a conference titled "Designing a K-5 Mathematics Specialist Certificate Program" (to view conference roster and presentations, please click here).

The following individuals have agreed to lead the course development efforts and sit on the Advisory Board for the program:

Deborah Ball, University of Michigan Mike Battista, the Ohio State University Picture Coming Soon! Megan Franke, University of California at Los Angeles Susan Friel, University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill
